Amplifying Citizen Science

Amplifying Reef Citizen Science

is a project lead by Great Barrier Reef Legacy with the ultimate goal of improving the accuracy, reliability and usefulness of citizen science programs on the Great Barrier Reef.

The first pilot program of its kind on the Great Barrier Reef, this project monitors and assess an inshore, midshelf and offshore reef off of Port Douglas with the ultimate goal of demonstrating how multiple citizen science datasets can be collated and reported using a centralised platform.

This project conducts and combines a multitude of existing reef citizen science programs in order to provide end users (including managers, operators, scientists and citizens) with easy access to a wide range of health indicators which can ideally be utilised to improve model estimates of Reef health.

Furthermore, through the use of these citizen science programs, this project will better engage the community through a unique blend of media and education content, encourage land based community participation in programs like Virtual Reef Diver, and deliver direct community engagement at a variety of local events.

Amplifying Citizen Science is a collaboration with the Queensland University of Technology and supported by local reef operator Calypso Reef Cruises. Funding for this project is provided by the Australian Government's Reef Trust in partnership with Great Barrier Reef Foundation.
